Research at University of Gothenburg and ChalmersMarine Paint is devoted to developing new and effective marine antifouling paints, which are more environmentally friendly than those in use today. The research is carried out at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, with 20 researchers engaged. Marine Paint is funded by The Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research, MISTRA. The Faculty of Sciences at the University of Gothenburg is hosting the programme. The research in Marine Paint is focused on generating knowledge that can be applied and used, and the company I-Tech is an important industrial partner to Marine Paint. Transport at sea — the opportunities and challengesShips transport about 90% of all trade to and from the EU and nearly 80% in and out of the United States. And shipping is, in its basis a sustainable means of transport. With low demands on infrastructure and a relatively low input of energy per quantity of transported goods. But the shipping industry faces some serious environmental challenges: The emission of greenhouse gases, the emission of NOx and SOx, the use of non sustainable antifouling measurements, oil discharges and bilge water and ballast water handling. Leisure boats face some of the same challenges as for the large tonnage. Hence, sustainable solutions for leisure boats are crucial for a step towards healthier coastal waters.
